This guide walks you through it from start to finish, with the safety steps that matter most.

A quick note before you start: Procedures vary slightly between Woods models (BB, BW, DS, RC, and Batwing series each have their own quirks). Always keep your machine's operator's manual handy and follow its specific instructions and torque values. When in doubt, call your dealer.


When Should You Replace Your Blades?

Don't wait for a blade to fail in the field. Replace or sharpen when you notice:

  • Visible dulling or rounding of the cutting edge that sharpening can no longer correct

  • Cracks, gouges, or bent blades from rocks, stumps, or debris

  • Excessive wear at the bolt/pin hole, which is a safety hazard

  • Ragged, stringy cuts instead of clean ones, or material that lays over instead of being severed

  • New vibration during operation, often a sign of an unbalanced or damaged blade

Step-by-Step: Replacing the Blades

Many Woods cutters use a blade pin and keeper system rather than the single oversized nut found on some other brands — a design many operators find quicker to service. Some models do use a blade bolt and nut. Identify which yours has before you begin.

Step 1: Access the Blades

With the cutter safely blocked up, locate the access/port hole in the top of the deck (or work from underneath if your model and blocking allow safe access). Clear away any built-up grass, dirt, and debris around the spindle and blade pan (stump jumper) with your wire brush.

Step 2: Inspect the Mounting Hardware

Look at the blade pin, keeper, bolt, nut, and the blade pan itself. Replace any hardware that is worn, rounded, cracked, or elongated at the holes. Reusing worn hardware is a common cause of blade failure.

Step 3: Apply Penetrating Oil

Spray the blade bolts/pins and let the penetrant work for 15–30 minutes. This makes a stuck fastener far easier and saves you fighting it.

Step 4: Remove the Old Blades

  • Bolt-and-nut style: Hold the bolt head while you break the nut loose, or use an impact wrench. A breaker bar with a cheater pipe gives leverage on stubborn nuts. For severely seized hardware, careful application of heat can help — keep it away from anything flammable.

  • Pin-and-keeper style: Remove the keeper/retaining hardware, then slide the blade pin out and lower the blade away. Support the blade as it comes free — they're heavy and the edges are sharp.

Wire-brush the blade pan, spindle, and pin/bolt bores so the new blades seat flat. Debris between the blade and pan causes imbalance and improper torque.

Step 7: Torque to Spec

Step 8: Final Inspection

  • Confirm both blades are installed for the same rotation and can swing freely.

  • Double-check all hardware is tight and keepers are fully seated.

  • Remove all tools from the deck and the work area.

Step 9: Test Run

Lower the cutter, carefully remove your blocking, and reconnect the driveline. With the area clear of people and debris, run the cutter at PTO speed briefly and listen for unusual vibration or noise. A smooth, balanced cutter tells you the job is done right. If you feel new vibration, shut down and re-check blade balance and orientation.


Quick Maintenance Tips to Extend Blade Life

  • Avoid mowing over rocks, stumps, and metal debris. Walk new ground first when you can.

  • Cut at the proper height (typically 2"–9" depending on model) to reduce dirt contact and dulling.

  • Sharpen between replacements to keep clean cuts and reduce engine and driveline strain.

  • Grease the blade spindle bearing and lubricate pivot points, especially before storage, to prevent rust.
