How to Choose the Right PTO Shaft

Before purchasing a replacement PTO shaft, check the following specifications:

1. Measure the PTO Shaft Length

Measure the required shaft length according to the manufacturer's recommended measuring procedure. The PTO shaft must have enough telescoping travel during operation without becoming too short or bottoming out.

2. Check the Tractor PTO Spline

Identify the tractor PTO output configuration. Common tractor PTO configurations include 1-3/8" 6-spline connections, along with other spline configurations depending on the equipment.

3. Check the Implement End

The implement-side connection must match the gearbox or implement input shaft. Check the spline count, yoke type and connection style before ordering.

4. Match the PTO Shaft Series

The shaft series should be appropriate for the horsepower and torque requirements of the implement. Using an undersized driveline can lead to premature wear or failure.

5. Determine Whether You Need a Slip Clutch or Shear Pin

Different implements use different overload protection systems. Match the replacement PTO shaft to the protection method specified for your equipment.

6. Check for CV or Standard PTO Design

If your implement requires significant angular movement, verify whether a CV PTO shaft is required. Standard and CV drivelines should not be treated as interchangeable without confirming compatibility.
